What is a shut-in?
A shut-in is a geological feature similar to a gorge that “shuts-in” the river/creek. Water cascades through billon-and-a-half-year-old rocks, creating chutes, pools and waterfalls. The name originated from Appalachia but Missouri is the only state that uses the term. Everyone knows about the famous Johnson Shut-Ins at Johnson Shut-Ins State Park, but Missouri is home to over 100 different and unique shut-ins.
I have created a map with 90 Missouri shut-ins, around 60 of which are located on public land.
