Rock Formations

How did the Ozarks form? To understand this question we must first understand what type of rock we're dealing with in the Ozarks. As many know, the Ozarks are full of karst topography that's comprised of mainly limestone and dolomite rock. This was deposited when a shallow sea covered the landscape and deposited it's sediments which built up over time. Over the many years, rivers and streams have formed and cut down into the rock, eroding away much of the material. In present day we see hills and valleys. But what we don't see are the underground tunnels and systems networking underneath the hills and the many rock formations looming in the dense wooded hillsides. These are what make the Ozarks special and unique from many other places. Water has played a critical role in shaping the Ozarks; without water there would be no Ozarks today. This page is dedicated to highlighting the interesting rock formations throughout the Missouri Ozarks. From huge pinnacle rocks to large caves with some of the rarest formation in the world, Missouri has an impressive category of rock formations.
