Rockpile Mountain Wilderness
Rockpile Mountain Wilderness is a very diverese area. It includes a lot of natural and some manmade features that make the area very impressive and interesting to explore. Rockpile Mountain got it's name from the circular structure made out of rocks that was built by Native Americans long ago. The rockpile has been slowly destroyed by humans over the years, but the outline of the old structure can still be seen today.
Trail:
There is one trail at Rockpile Mountain. The trailhead/parking lot is located on top of Little Grassy Mountain and the trail follows a ridgeline all of the way to Rockpile Mountain. From there the trail splits, one side going up to the top of Rockpile Mountain and the other going down to the Rockpile Mountain Shut-In. The trail is around 10 miles long and is popular for backpacking. There are no facilities located here.
Other Interesting Features:
Rockpile Mountain Shut-In features blue water with scenic cascades that flow into the St. Francis River. There are many impressive dolomite formations alongside the St. Francis River such as huge caves, tall bluffs, natural arches, pinnacles, and mushroom rocks.
